No. 16/14 Marquette Opens 2012 With 4-0 Win Over St. Bonaventure
Aug. 17, 2012
The No. 16/14 Marquette University women's soccer team (1-0-0) scored on its first three shots on goal and cruised to a 4-0 victory over St. Bonaventure (0-1-0) Friday night at Valley Fields in the season opener for both programs.
Marquette's balanced offensive attack saw 12 players take at least one shot and just 15 minutes into the match the squad had already built a 2-0 advantage. Senior Rachael Sloan, who saw action in just six matches last season, headed home an Ally Miller service at the 6:30 mark to open the night's scoring.
Eight minutes later, junior Taylor Madigan was the recipient of a Kate Reigle service and was able to beat SBU netminder Kathryn Kerkman from 10 yards out. The play was kept alive on a diving effort by senior Rachel Brown, who would collect her first goal of the campaign at the 26:54 mark when she was able to settle a deflection and calmly beat the keeper with an impressive strike.
Marquette finished with a 20-2 advantage in total shots, including the final attempt, which resulted in sophomore Mary Luba's goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second half.
MU's defensive crew was equally impressive and didn't allow a single shot by St. Bonaventure until midway through the second half. Sophomore goalie Sofie Schunk picked up the shutout in her first career start and also collected her first save in the win.
Marquette is now 11-7-2 all-time in season openers, which includes an 11-5-1 mark under head coach Markus Roeders.
The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. when the team hosts No. 4/6 Florida State at Valley Fields.
