WSOC falls to No. 2 Stanford, 4-0, in season opener
Aug. 18, 2017
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s soccer team dropped the opening match of its 25th campaign to No. 2 Stanford, 4-0, on Friday evening at Valley Fields.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Henry made a career-high nine saves in the match for the Golden Eagles (0-1), who nearly took the game’s first lead in the 26th minute on a penalty kick.
The match was also a night of firsts for Marquette players as redshirt sophomore Bri Jager and redshirt freshman Mary Kate Simon got their first collegiate starts. Seven other Golden Eagles - Erin Johnston, Maggie Lena, Kylie Sprecher, Elaina Eckert, Maddi Monticello, Abby Hess and Rachel Johnson - made their college debuts during the season opener.
Redshirt junior Kyra Carusa led the Cardinal (1-0) with a pair of goals on the night, while Catarina Macario and Mariah Lee added one apiece.
The Cardinal struck first in the 36th minute as Macario scored the first goal of her collegiate career to the left upper 90 after a big save by Henry on Tierna Davidson. Henry’s save deflected back off the left post before bouncing back into the middle of the box to Macario.
Though Stanford tallied the match’s first goal, the Golden Eagles had a terrific opportunity in the 26th minute following a yellow card on Cardinal keeper Alison Jahansouz. Jamie Kutey was fouled near the top of the 18-yard box, leading to an Eli Beard penalty kick that was saved by Jahansouz at the far post.
The night’s second goal came at the 51:42 mark as Carusa struck from the middle of the box on a Jordan DiBiasi feed. DiBiasi broke on a pass up the left flank and got the ball back to Carusa for the tally.
Stanford’s final two goals came on headers less than two minutes apart as Carusa and Lee posted goals three and four on the night.
Marquette returns to the Valley to face Kentucky on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 2:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on GoMarquette.com and be followed at 5 p.m. by Stanford and Wisconsin at Valley Fields.
