MILWAUKEE- Sophomore Maegan Kelly's goal in the 25th minute was the only goal the No. 12/14 Marquette University women's soccer team needed to defeat Western Michigan, 1-0, in the Golden Eagles' season opener Friday evening at Valley Fields.

Kelly, who earned her first career start, received a pass from Kate Reigle around midfield, beat a swarm of Western Michigan defenders and finished her shot low to the far post past Maddie Reed for the game winner at the 24:47 mark.

The Golden Eagles continued to look for another goal and got off 12 shots, three on goal, before the final whistle blew.

Ally Miller nearly gave MU a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute from a corner kick, but her shot was blocked by WMU defenders.

Lindsey Page had a good look at the goal about a minute later with her shot from close range that skimmed the crossbar. Page also had an attempt earlier in the second half that was saved by Reed.

For the game, Marquette outshot Western Michigan, 19-3, and owned a 9-1 corner kicks advantage. Goalkeeper Natalie Kulla saw some pressure from the Broncos' offense, but only needed to make one save to earn her first clean sheet of the season.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Sunday evening against Northwestern at Valley Fields. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
