Final Stats

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's soccer team lost an exhibition match to Illinois, 4-0, on Friday night at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles used 29 of its 31 players in the one warmup contest for the year.

Playing its one preseason match of the year, Marquette head coach Markus Roeders used different combinations of players against the Illini, who was playing its second preseason contest of the year.

"Our team is disappointed by tonight's result since it doesn't reflect the positives in our game. We are not shocked by how the game unfolded since the team is at it's physical low point of pre-season. Training three to four times a day for the past week took it's toll on our players mentally and physicially," head coach Markus Roeders said.

Illinois' Jessica Bayne scored three times in the match. She started the scoring in the second minute. Christin Karniski fed a free kick from 30 yards out to Bayne who put the ball past MU keeper Katie Bissen.

Tara Harless scored Illinois' second goal. She blasted a shot from 25 yards that Bissen could not handle and a pair of Marquette defenders could not clear off the goal line..

Bayne scored her second strike just after the start of the second half. In the 47th minute, Bayne forced a turnover five yards from the box and turned, firing past bissen.

In a predetermined sudden victory overtime session, Bayne scored again placing her strike in from eight yards out after receiving a feed from Harless.

"We looked a step or two slow tonight and give credit to a very good Illinois team who took advantage of their chance and exposing some flaws in our game.," Roeders added. "We feel good that we tried many different things tonight and our entire roster had a chance to contribute. The upcoming week will be important to get our legs fresh and to keep working towards our overall game. We have a young squad with great veteran leadership, an exciting combination for the upcoming season."

Marquette opens up the regular season on Friday, Aug. 29, at 8:15 p.m. against Vanderbilt at Valley Fields.
