Aug. 22, 2014
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's soccer team opened up its 2014 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Loyola-Chicago Friday night at Valley Fields.
After 80 minutes of action Marquette and Loyola-Chicago were tied at 0-0. MU then rattled off three goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to oust its Chicago counterparts. Ashley Handwork was able to break through in the 81st minute when teammate Mady Vicker fed her with an excellent cross from the far right sideline. Handwork pushed it past Loyola-Chicago's keeper to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage in the late stages of the match.
The Golden Eagles struck again in the final minute of regulation. Sophomore forward Darian Powell connected twice on assists from teammate Liz Bartels in the 89th minute. Powell ignited the Marquette offensive attack when she converted on two quick strikes in less than 40 seconds.
Marquette outshot the Ramblers 15-1 and attempted eight corner kicks opposed to Loyola-Chicago's zero. Along with the aggressive offense, the Golden Eagles maintained a stingy defensive unit led by goalkeeper Amanda Engel. Engel collected the clean sheet, saving one shot.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes, and the score was knotted at zero apiece. The Golden Eagles managed to out shoot their counterparts 5-0 in the first stanza.
MU returns to action this Sunday when it hosts Northwestern at 4:30 p.m. Central time at Valley Fields in the final match of the Marquette Invitational.
