Aug 25, 2013
PORTLAND, Ore.--The No. 14 Marquette women's soccer team ended its trip out west on a high note with a 3-2 victory at Portland State on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles (1-1) battled back from a 1-0 deficit with three consecutive goals at Hillsboro Stadium after a scoreless first half of play.
MU dominated the ball and took 26 shots in the game including 12 on goal, while holding the Vikings to just six shots. The Golden Eagles also owned a slight edge in corner kicks by a 5-4 margin. Portland State was given two yellow cards and two red cards in the physical game.
"It was a gutsy performance by our team today," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We came off a highly charged game on Friday at Portland and had exerted a lot of energy. Today's first half was not as efficiently played as we need it to be but our team stepped up in the second half. It was unfortunate to allow the goal which put us behind, but the ladies played relentlessly afterwards. We should a tremendous amount of determination and willingness to win. I am very proud of our effort and leaving with a win today. The goal we allowed at the end doesn't sit well with our team, but we can and will learn from it. It's been a good weekend, we got better and we are excited to move forward going into the next weekend."
After the scoreless first half drew to a close with nine shots from MU and just three from the Vikings, PSU came out of the break and scored first in the 51st minute on a ball that deflected off of an MU defender on a corner kick.
Senior Taylor Madigan tied the game 1-1 at the 78:26 mark with a header that crossed to the far post after classmate Cara Jacobson fed her the ball. Senior Maegan Kelly made good use of a penalty kick awarded after a PSU red card as she easily found the back of the net, which put MU in front, 2-1 in the 80th minute. Kelly found junior Mady Vicker in the 87th minute, which gave the Golden Eagles a 3-1 advantage. Portland State attempted a comeback and scored just four seconds before time expired for a final score of 3-2.
Sophomore Amanda Engel earned her first win of the season, playing all 90 minutes in net and allowing two goals with two saves in the game. She improves to 1-1 this season.
Kelly finished the day with five shots, two on goal, one goal and one assist. Vicker took two shots and scored one goal, while Madigan recorded three shots and one goal. Jacobson also dished out one assist.
The Golden Eagles will travel to South Bend, Ind. next weekend and compete in the Notre Dame/adidas Invitational. MU opens the tournament against UCLA on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. CT before concluding against Oakland at 10 am CT, Sunday, Sept. 1.
