Powell scores twice at Marquette tops Drake, 3-0
Aug. 25, 2017
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team collected a 3-0 home win against Drake on Friday evening at Valley Fields as graduate student Darian Powell scored twice and Carrie Madden posted a goal and two assists.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) came out strong and never looked back in the victory as Maddy Henry and Sloane Carlson combined for Marquette’s first clean sheet since an Oct. 20 match at Villanova last season. Madden scored MU’s other goal and assisted on both of Powell’s strikes.
Powell’s tally came in the 24th minute off a setup from Madden and Eli Beard. Sophomore Emily Hess, making her first start of the year, got the ball to Beard off a free kick before Beard dribbled a few yards and fired it to the right post from 30 yards. Beard’s cross found the head of Madden who sent the ball over to Powell for the score.
The Bulldogs (1-2) had 12 of their three shots come on cage as all three were denied by the MU keepers.
Madden netted her second goal of the season off a Celarek corner kick just a minute and 55 seconds into the second half. The Deer Park, Illinois native collected her lone goal of the night with a header past Morris.
Powell vaulted herself into the MU record book with her second goal of the game in the 54th minute as Madden played the ball back from the left post with the DU keeper out of the net.
The Golden Eagles second match this weekend comes at noon Central time on Sunday at the University of Louisville against the 3-0 Cardinals. The contest will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra through the Watch ESPN application
