No. RV/23 Golden Eagles Fall, 1-0, in Overtime to New Mexico

MILWAUKEE - New Mexico's Jennifer Williams scored in the 98th minute as the No. RV/23 Marquette University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to the Lobos, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in the finale of the MKE Cup at Valley Fields. The loss is the Golden Eagles first of the season (2-1-1), while New Mexico wins the MKE Cup and improves to 3-0-1 overall.
With the game deadlocked at zero through the first two regulation periods, the Lobos scored on their first opportunity in overtime. Rachel Montoya collected the ball on the right side near the midfield line and served a long ball to Collins on the run. Collins surged ahead and chipped the ball over Marquette keeper Natalie Kulla, who left the box in attempt to deny Collins of her opportunity. With Kulla out of the net, Collins pushed the ball forward and in the back of the net. Despite dominating play for the majority of the game, the Golden Eagles were unable to capitalize on any of their 19 opportunities. Eleven of those shots came in the first half, nine of which were on goal. Senior Rosie Malone-Povolny and freshman Cara Jacobson each fired off a team-high four shots, three on target, while junior Lindsey Page also registered three shots on goal. Overall, Marquette had six players who each had at least one scoring opportunity that was saved. Meanwhile, Kelli Cornell made 12 saves for New Mexico and was named the tournament MVP. For the game, Marquette owned a 19-7 shots advantage and 9-1corner kicks differential. Kulla played the entire 97:52 in net and made two saves. Junior Rachael Sloan and sophomore Lisa Philbin, who scored goals in the 3-0 win over Auburn, and junior Kerry McBride were named to the all-tournament team. In the first game of the day, Auburn topped UW-Milwaukee, 2-1. The Golden Eagles will return to action Friday, Sept. 3, at the Minnesota Gold Classic where they will take on No. 22/25 San Diego at 4:30 p.m. Game Notes • Marquette moves to 17-5 all-time in the MKE Cup and 12-4 when those games are played at Valley Fields. • The home loss at Valley Fields marks the first since Oct. 2 against Rutgers, and only the ninth in the last four seasons. Marquette had a six-game unbeaten streak at Valley Fields entering the game.
