WSOC Rolls Past Boston U., 3-0
Aug. 30, 2015
MILWAUKEE - Led by goals from Liz Bartels, Molly Pfeiffer and Erin Holland, the Marquette University women's soccer team pushed past Boston University for a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
"I am really proud of our team with a great effort today," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. "I'm obviously excited with a 3-0 win over a good Boston University team. They have played some tough matches, but haven’t always been on the positive end of the results. It was huge to get out early, like on Friday, which we felt like we let one get away, which was disappointing against Portland. We saw glimpses on Friday and this was our first win at home, getting a shutout and our scorers on the score sheet, all important parts. We go some players in that haven’t seen the playing time that we would like them to get, so it was a big step forward and hopefully it gives us some additional momentum to carry into school next week."
Bartels put the Golden Eagles (2-2-0) on the board first in the 20th minute, while Molly Pfeiffer added her team-high second goal on the year after halftime, as did Erin Holland with just under six minutes to play.
Bartels goal came from about 10 yards out as the midfielder slid in to take advantage of a misplayed header by a BU defender off a Caroline Fink cross at the far post. The Omaha, Nebraska native also assisted Pfeiffer’s goal in the 56th minute by chipping the ball just inside the 18-yard box to a streaking Pfeiffer, who buried the shot past the keeper from right to left.
Holland, making her first start of the year on defense, scored the game’s final goal off a Madison Dunker corner kick with 5:53 remaining in regulation. Holland headed the ball at the far post, and although a BU defender connected with the shot, the ball snuck in just under the crossbar.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, Sept. 4 at Valley Fields against Minnesota at 7 p.m.
