MILWAUKEE - Despite outshooting Oakland 17-7 and owning a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks, Marquette (1-1) couldn't stop the Golden Grizzlies (2-0) from scoring twice in an 11 minute span for 2-0 Oakland victory. With the win, Oakland clinched the title in the Verizon Wireless Milwaukee Cup. Marquette placed second in the tournament.

For the second time in as many matches, Marquette found itself in a deficit, 1-0. MU had it's opportunities to score in the first half, but Oakland keeper Sarah Buckland recorded three of her five saves in the first half. One save came off the foot of junior Kristen Jensen off a penalty kick midway through the period.

Oakland took the lead in the 41st minute when Natalie Simas scored on a crossing pass from Silje Moen. Seven minutes into the second half, OU scored its final tally off a corner kick. Erica Demers delivered the kick which sailed through the box and past MU keeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) to the foot of Katie Arnott who scored from one yard out.

"I felt pretty good at halftime that we'd be able to score a goal and tie the score," head coach Markus Roeders said. "But we let one in early in the second half and being down 2-0 is difficult. A lot of positives came from this game. We showed that we're not going to give up."

MU had several chances to score, including two opportunities from freshman midfielder Sarah Uyenishi (Lake Zurich, Ill.). Uyenishi played a shot just wide and a second off the bottom of the crossbar as the Golden Grizzlies prevented Marquette from scoring.

"Being down 2-0, we just tried to push front," Uyenishi said. "We had some great balls from the outside, we just weren't fortunate to put any of them away."

Oakland head coach Nick O'Shea agreed that Marquette had several chances and showed the dangerous nature of its offense.

"They were so dangerous in the end," O'Shea said. "I'm sure if we had a one goal lead, they would have gotten a goal. They were starting to put it together and we were fortunate to keep them from scoring."

Three Marquette players were named to the all-tournament team. The all-tournament team included: Kate Gordon (Offensive MVP), Anne Ioder and Stephanie Welch from Marquette; Sarah Buckland, Kim Moore (Defensive MVP), Christine Selesky and Erica Deemers from Oakland; Gina Siedentopf and Crystal Reed from Ohio; and Janice McGann and Maggie Suminski from Wis.-Milwaukee.

MU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m .EDT against Ohio State in the Marriott Dayton Flyers Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
