MILWAUKEE, Wis. - It was the first overtime match of the season for the No. 12/8 Marquette women's soccer team (3-0-1) and the Golden Eagles finished in a 0-0 draw with Central Michigan (3-1-1) Monday afternoon at Valley Fields.


Marquette had a number of scoring opportunities and owned the edge on shots with 22, while holding the Chippewas to just seven. The Golden Eagles took 11 shots on goal in the contest and took 12 corner kicks. CMU took just two corner kicks.

In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Sofie Schunk did not allow a goal for the fourth consecutive match in as many career starts.

In the 25th minute of the match the Golden Eagles had three quick opportunities to score after a corner kick from junior Maegan Kelly. Senior Ally Miller, junior Emily Jacobson and Kelly each attempted a shot, but were denied.

A final shot in the closing seconds of the half by junior Kate Reigle was blocked just as time was expiring.

In the 79th minute, Reigle, senior Rachael Sloan and junior Vanessa Legault-Cordisco each had quick shot attempts that the Chippewas kept from finding the back of the net.

CMU took two shots in the first overtime period that didn't score and junior Taylor Madigan accounted for MU's first shot, but her attempt was saved.

In the final period the Chippewas did not take a shot, while Marquette took five. In the 106th minute of play junior Cara Jacobson took a corner kick that Kelly took a shot from, but it was saved. Jacobson then took back-to-back corners and a shot from sophomore Mary Luba was saved with under two minutes remaining. Jacobson took another corner kick with 15 seconds left in the match, and a shot from Madigan was block in the final seconds to end the contest in a draw.

The Golden Eagles will play their next three contests on the road. Beginning Friday, Sept. 7 MU will head to Durham, N.C. for the Duke/Nike Challenge and face No. 12 North Carolina at 4:00 p.m. CT before facing No. 2 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 9.
