Marquette wins Invitational, defeats Mercer 2-0
Sept. 3, 2017
The Golden Eagles (5-1) have won five straight and have not allowed an opponent to score in the last 381:55 of game play, dating back to Aug. 20 against Kentucky.
Freshman Kylie Sprecher and redshirt junior Ryley Bugay were announced as the invitational’s top offensive and defensive players, while seniors Caroline Fink and Beard also earned recognition on the all-tournament team roster.
Beard’s goal came in the 32nd minute from 10 yards out as freshman Kylie Sprecher sent a cross through the box from deep on the right flank. Redshirt junior Carrie Madden was taken down by a Mercer defender at the edge of the goal area as the ball made its way back to the center of the pitch to Beard.
The goal is Beard’s second this year and the assist is Sprecher’s second helper and third point of the weekend. The freshman forward also notched the match winner in MU’s 1-0 shutout of Central Michigan on Friday evening.
Johnston struck from 30 yards out in the 83rd minute off an assist from Darian Powell. The tally was Johnston’s first career goal and gave Marquette a comfortable lead over the Bears.
The Golden Eagles owned a 29-8 edge over Mercer in shots and notched seven corner kicks to the Bears’ two.
Marquette hits the road for its first extended period away from Milwaukee this season with matches next weekend on the East Coast. They will face Boston University on Friday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. Central time before heading south to take on Rhode Island at noon CT on Sunday.
