No. 25 Marquette Blanks Saint Mary's, 3-0

MILWAUKEE-- The No. 25 Marquette women's soccer team defeated the Saint Mary's College of California Gaels, 3-0, Friday night at Valley Fields in its home opener as part of the first annual Marquette Invitational.
The Golden Eagles (3-2) opened the scoring in the 26th minute of the game when senior Cara Jacobson scored off an assist from Haley Fritzen.
MU wasted no time adding points to the board as the Golden Eagles struck again just 26 seconds later when junior Mary Luba capitalized on a shot rebounded off the crossbar of the goal.
Senior Taylor Madigan notched a goal at the 31:59 mark of the game off an assist from junior Mady Vicker after Vicker's shot was saved in the box. Madigan took the ball from the rebound.
The 3-0 advantage for the Golden Eagles held throughout the game as both teams failed to find the back of the net in the second stanza.
Marquette held an advantage on corner kicks with 10 compared to St. Mary's one and the Golden Eagles outshot the Gaels, 20-6 in the contest, including 12 shots on goal.
Saint Mary's (1-4) received a strong contribution from freshman goalkeeper Kaeli Schmidt, who was active with nine saves.
Sophomore Amanda Engel recorded a clean sheet, registering five saves for the Golden Eagles.
MU will return to Valley Fields on Sunday, Sept. 8 and conclude the Marquette Invitational against Colorado College. Saint Mary's will play against Loyola-Chicago on Sunday at 11 am to open the day.
