Sep 8, 2013
MILWAUKEE- The No. 25 Marquette women's soccer team continued its home winning streak after a 3-1 victory over Colorado College to claim the tournament title at the first ever Marquette Invitational.
The first half of the game got off to a slow start with both teams having ample opportunities, but unable to find the back of the net. Marquette (4-2) came out strong in the sixth minute when senior midfielder Megan Kelly raced down the field where she crossed the ball over to Vicker who attempted to header the shot in, only for it to go wide.
The Tigers (2-3) responded a few minutes later with a breakaway down the center of the field, but senior defender Emily Jacobson blocked the shot and cleared the ball for the Golden Eagles.
In the 27th minute of action MU ended the scoreless drought when Kelly passed the ball over to Madigan as she tapped the ball in to make the score 1-0.
The 1-0 lead held through the first half for the Golden Eagles, but Colorado College came firing out of the break when midfielder Sarah Schweiss found the right corner of the net and delivered a goal in the first minute of the half, which evened the score at 1-1.
Marquette quickly reciprocated when senior Vanessa Legault-Cordisco kicked the ball towards the net only to have it deflected by the Tigers' goalie Kate Scheele, but Vicker was in position to catch the rebound for a Marquette goal, which put the Golden Eagles back on top, 2-1. Madigan responded with her second goal after a cross from Legault-Cordisco from the right side to hit the left corner of the net and extend MU's advantage to 3-1.
Colorado College threatened in the remainder of the half, but sophomore Amanda Engel stopped any attempts at a score as the Golden Eagles 3-1 lead held through the end of the game.
Engel earned her fourth win of the season and registered two saves in a complete 90 minutes of action.
The Golden Eagles held a 16-8 advantage on shots, including seven on goal, but the Tigers took a slight edge on corner kicks, 4-3.
Madigan was named the Marquette Invitational Offensive MVP, while senior Katie Hishmeh was tabbed for Defensive MVP honors. Vicker and Jacobson were both named to the all-tournament squad.
Marquette will return home next Friday, Sept. 13 as the Golden Eagles host Colgate. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
