MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Milwaukee on Friday night at Valley Fields thanks to Molly Pfeiffer's equalizer in the 89th minute.
Pfeiffer provided the game-tying tally in the 89th minute, which capped off a series of scoring opportunities that had previously come up empty for the Golden Eagles (2-3-2). Madison Dunker provided the assist to Pfeiffer on a cross into the box.
The first half featured few scoring chances for both squads, as they combined to tally three shots on target. MU's best scoring chance came when Ashley Handwork was fouled 25 yards out which awarded MU a free kick which was stopped by UWM's Mallory Geurts.
UWM opened the second half by breaking the scoreless tie when Anna Smalley scored just 35 seconds into the stanza. The play was started by Maria Stephans when she threaded the ball to Smalley, who was able to break away from MU defenders and find the net.
Marquette would apply offensive pressure throughout the second half, but was unable to capitalize. Pfeiffer's tally in the 88th minute would square the match and send it into overtime. The goal for Pfeiffer was her second of the season.
Marquette would continue its offensive barrage in the first overtime, recording two straight corner kicks, both of which threatened the goal.
Neither team was able to create a scoring chance in the second overtime. Pfeiffer and Bartels both tallied shots from outside of the box.
The Golden Eagles out-shot the Panthers, 18-8, but were only able to manage three shots on target. MU also amassed eight corner kicks, whereas UWM tallied just two.
The draw is the second straight in the series between the two squads.
Marquette will hit the road for its next contest against Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 11 with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. CT.
