KINGSTON, Rhode Island – Bri Jaeger scored her first career goal and Darian Powell posted her third of the year as the Marquette University women’s soccer team downed Rhode Island, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex.

The Golden Eagles (7-1), who out-shot URI 18-12, won their seventh match in a row, but allowed their first goal to an opponent since Aug. 20.  Marquette sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Henry made five saves in net, while Julia Freeman countered with 11 for the Rams (2-5).

Jaeger’s goal came on Marquette’s first corner of the day on a ball served in from Eli Beard on the left side. The ball worked its way into the goal area where it found Jaeger, who buried it into the upper reaches of the net.

The goal came on one of MU’s seven shots in the opening frame as the Golden Eagles outpaced URI 7-4 in shots and 8-4 in corner kicks. Marquette’s best scoring opportunity after Jaeger’s tally came in the 34th minute as Hailey VanDerLeest was denied in front of the net by Freeman.

MU pushed the pace to begin the second and had a number of good looks before Powell capitalized with a header on a great cross from Sprecher. Powell’s third goal of the year came after Sprecher and Jaeger each had good looks thwarted by Freeman.

Allyson Reynolds’ goal for URI at the 69:49 mark was the first for an MU opponent since a Kentucky goal on Aug. 20 at Valley Fields. That marker stopped MU’s shutout streak at a total of 541:44.

Redshirt junior Carrie Madden missed her second match in a row and Jamie Kutey was held out of the starting lineup after reaggravating an injury at BU on Friday. Redshirt junior Heather Handwork made her first start since her freshman year in 2014.

The Golden Eagles return to Valley Fields to host MVC preseason favorite Illinois State on Thursday evening before a Sunday, Sept. 17 contest at crosstown-foe Milwaukee.
