NORMAL, Ill.--After falling behind, 3-0, the No. 22 Marquette women's soccer team mounted a furious comeback that fell just short as the Golden Eagles fell 3-2 at Illinois State on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Emily Jacobson scored both goals for MU (5-3), one on a penalty kick and the other on a header off of a corner kick from junior Mary Luba.

"This was a disappointing result for us," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We didn't play a complete 90 minutes today. Illinois State came out strong, attacked us and we weren't ready to face them early in the game. After falling behind, we decided to play and good things started to happen. The last 60 minutes by us were impressive. We kept attacking them in waves, but it takes a complete performance to beat good teams. The upcoming week will be good to refocus, challenge ourselves and get mentally and physically ready for our next home match."

The Redbirds (4-4) struck quick in the contest just one minute into play to get onto the board first and the assault continued with back-to-back goals in the 15th and 28th minute.

Jacie Jermier was awarded a penalty in the 42nd minute, and Jacobson took the penalty kick, which sailed into the back of the net, to close the gap at 3-1 before halftime.

After the break, the Golden Eagles' offense was relentless with 14 shots in the second half. MU scored in the 73rd minute when Luba's corner found Jacobson for a goal and a 3-2 score. Marquette continued to attack, but could not convert shots and ISU took the 3-2 victory.

MU owned the edge on shots, 23-10, including 15 on goal, while corner kicks were even at six each.

In net, sophomore Amanda Engel played a complete 90 minutes and allowed three saves. Goalkeeper Aryn Newsom was stellar in net for the Redbirds with 13 saves.

Marquette will return home to Valley Fields on Saturday, Sept. 21 to host former conference foe, Louisville. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
