GREEN BAY, Wis. - Marquette overcame a one goal deficit to pick up a 2-1 win over Wis.-Green Bay in women's soccer. Marquette (3-2-1) owned possession for much of the contest as the Phoenix (1-4-1) was content to play defense. Senior forward Anne Ioder had the first chance of the match. Her shot in the sixth minute hit the post and was the only thing keeping MU from the early lead. Wis.-Green Bay made the most of its six first half shots. Gwen Zimmerman gave the Phoenix a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Sarah Ogilney played a ball to Zimmerman after the MU defense couldn't maintain control. Zimmerman's shot was past MU keeper Katie Bissen before she had a chance to react. Freshman forward Alison Loughrin scored her first career goal and the equalizer in the 43rd minute. Confusion in the UWGB defense led to a turnover that freshman midfielder Meghan Connelly controlled at the top of the penalty area. She led Loughrin who outran the rest of the Phoenix defense for the goal and the 1-1 tie.
Freshman midfielder Lauren Weber scored her first career goal, getting the match winner in the 80th minute. Senior midfielder Carolyn Klopp recorded the assist to Weber who took advantaged of the misplaced Green Bay defense.
"The last 60 minutes, we played well," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We started off slow. I don't think we went as hard at them in the beginning as we should have. But once we settled down and did what we were supposed to, we created some opportunities." The Phoenix nearly tied the match in the 85th minute. Stephanie Gross crossed a ball that nearly found its way to the foot of a UWGB forward. The Marquette defense was out of position and Bissen came off her line to narrowly punch the ball out of harm's way. Bissen made four stops for the match while her counterpart, Nora Kaitfors, made eight saves for the Phoenix. Marquette returns to action on Friday, Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m. when it begins Conference USA action against Tulane at Valley Fields. -MU- |
