MILWAUKEE, Wis. - After three games on the road, the no. 24/19 Marquette women's soccer team (5-2-1) returned to Valley Fields and defeated George Mason (4-5-0), 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.


It was the fifth shutout victory for the Golden Eagles as they allowed just three shots in the match and took 22.

The first half was fast-paced and the teams went into halftime locked in a 0-0 battle. MU took 11 shots in the first with four on goal, but could follow through and score.

In the second half, senior Ally Miller scored in the 50th minute on an assist from junior Emily Jacobson who had taken a corner kick. The ball was played perfectly off of the corner and into the right side of the net. It was Miller's third goal of the season and got MU on the board, 1-0.

In the 61st minute, junior Maegan Kelly shot the ball high that left open net on the right side for classmate Taylor Madigan who found the back off the net off of Kelly's assist. It was also Madigan's third goal of the season and the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 2-0.

The Patriots had a good look in the 79th minute as freshman goalkeeper Amanda Engel picked up a save, but MU's defense held strong to finish out with a victory.

Engel earned her second victory in as many starts and picked up her first collegiate shutout while recordeding one save. Sophomore Sofie Schunk also recorded one save in 16 minutes of play.

Marquette also owned a 6-1 edge on corner kicks and had 23 student-athletes get into the game showing the great depth on the bench.

For George Mason, Lyndse Hokanson notched six saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Golden Eagles will resume BIG EAST play next weekend as they travel to Seton Hall and Rutgers. Kick-off against the Pirates is 7:00 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 21. Kick-off at Rutgers is Sunday, Sept. 23 at Noon CT.
