Marquette edges Cal Poly, 3-2

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s soccer team took down Cal Poly, 3-2, in its first match of the Marquette Invitational on Friday night at Valley Fields.
Carrie Madden notched the go-ahead goal for Marquette (3-4-2) in the 84th minute after the Mustangs responded from a two-goal deficit to tie the match. The goal is the redshirt sophomore’s first of the season in Blue and Gold and came off an assist from Molly Pfeiffer, who led all players with three points on the night.
After a kit change midway through the first half, the Barrington, Illinois native tallied her third goal of the season in the 18th minute off a Leah Celarek corner kick to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 edge.
Marquette’s second goal came on Erin Holland's first of the season in the 34th minute. The tally came as Meegan Johnston delivered a free kick to Morgan Proffitt, who assisted Holland as she headed it into the net.
Lexi Marietti’s scored the first Cal Poly (4-3-1) goal in the 50th minute off of a corner kick, the first of her career. After a missed penalty kick by Liz Bartels for the Golden Eagles, Caitlyn Kreutz came down on the other end, scoring the penalty kick and equalizer for the Mustangs.
Marquette tallied 13 shots, seven of which were on target, while Cal Poly recorded seven shots with four on the mark.
Marquette concludes the Invitational at 1:30 p.m. Central time on Sunday against CSUN at Valley Fields. The match will be broadcast live on GoMarquette.com with MUTV's Jack Goods and Matt Unger on the call.
