Marquette Women Defeat CSUN, 3-2
Sept. 18, 2016
MILWAUKEE – Darian Powell’s 84th minute goal lifted the Marquette women’s soccer team over CSUN in a 3-2 win to secure the Marquette Invitational title on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Senior Meegan Johnston posted her first two goals of the season in the first half and the Golden Eagles (4-4-2) responded on Powell’s late tally after the Matadors tied the match in the 65th minute.
Johnston earned Marquette Invitational Offensive Most Valuable Player honors for her play over the weekend, while teammate Morgan Proffitt was honored as the invitational’s most valuable defensive player. Friday night’s goal scorers Molly Pfeiffer and Carrie Madden joined them on the all-tournament team.
Johnston’s first goal of the match came in the fifth minute from deep in the left corner. The senior corralled the ball along the goal line and sent a volley back into the box that was lifted over the CSUN keeper and tucked inside the far post. The goal was just the second for her in her Marquette career and the first since her first year in Blue and Gold in 2014.
It took just seven minutes for Johnston to strike again, this time on a cross from Proffitt. Proffitt found Johnston at the very top of the 18-yard box and her second goal of the day came as she flicked a header to beat the keeper on the right side of the net.
The Matadors (4-2-4) found their first goal in the 57th minute from redshirt senior Kourtney Kutscher. She found the net from nine yards out off a right-footed liner in the far post. Kutscher scored her second goal of the season off a setup by her sister Lindsay Kutscher.
Eight minutes after CSUN’s first goal, senior Camille Watson notched a goal to tie the game up 2-2. Watson fired a shot from 19 yards out and it came unassisted.
Marquette struck back in the 84th minute on Powell’s match winner. Powell tallied her first goal of the season from eight yards out and scored in the far post off an assist by junior Madison Dunker who sent the ball in off a set piece from the midline.
The Golden Eagles begin BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Creighton in a match broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go.
