MILWAUKEE - Senior forward Laura Culhane scored in the 75th minute to snap a scoreless deadlock giving Marquette (4-3-1, 1-1 C-USA) a 1-0 win over Houston (2-5-1, 0-2 C-USA). Culhane was the beneficiary of an initial shot by freshman forward Beth McGill. McGill received a cross from sophomore forward Julie Thompson at the near post. McGill's attempt from seven yards was stopped by Houston goalkeeper Erin Ferguson. The rebound went to the near post, where Culhane found the ball and an open net from eight yards out. Marquette was the aggressor in the second half, taking 12 of its 17 shots. Play was even in the first half, with both teams taking five strikes. Houston nearly took the lead midway through the first half. Houston forward Meghan Moreo fired a shot that made it past MU keeper Katie Bissen, but senior defender Lindsay Smale was in proper position to keep the ball from finding the net. The Marquette bench was also key to the team's efforts; 12 of the 17 shots were taken by reserves, led by freshman midfielder Ashley George with three.
The Golden Eagles take on Wis.-Milwaukee on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
