Sept. 22, 2011
MILWAUKEE - A golden goal by Mady Vickerin the 98th minute lifted the No. 14/15 Marquette University women's soccer team over DePaul, 2-1, Thursday evening at Valley Fields.
With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 9-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons drop to 2-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league action.
Both Marquette and DePaul tallied two shots a piece in overtime before junior Britney Scott found Vicker unmarked just outside the 18 yard box. Scott dished the ball off to Vicker, who dribbled into the box and beat DePaul's Megan Pyrz to the near post for her first career goal and game winner.
MU struck early in the match when sophomore Meagan Kelly chipped in a cross from Kate Rielge to give Marquette a 1-0 lead at the 5:40 mark. The Golden Eagles kept the pressure up for the remainder of the first half, launching nine of their 18 total shots in the period.
The Blue Demons were aggressive offensively to begin the second half, putting a pair of shots on net before Morgan Celaya found the back of the net in the 71st minute to tie the match 1-1.
The Golden Eagles had four shot attempts in the final 20 minutes following DePaul's goal to end the game in regulation but were unable to convert.
Marquette had 11 shots on goal and held a 4-2 corner kick advantage in the victory.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 25 when they host defending NCAA Champion Notre Dame at Valley Fields at 1 p.m.
