PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Marquette women's soccer team (7-2-1, 3-0-0) recorded its seventh shutout of the season on Sunday with a 2-0 defeat of Rutgers (8-4-0, 1-3-0) at Yucak Field.

The Golden Eagles once again outshot their opponents with a 19-9 edge. MU is now 7-0-1 when outshooting opponents this season.

Junior Cara Jacobson found classmate Taylor Madigan in the 20th minute from the left side just five yards away and Madigan sank the ball in the back of the left side of the net to put MU on the board first, 1-0.

Just two minutes later, junior Maegan Kelly nearly scored as her shot down the middle bounced off the post. Kelly got another opportunity in the 23rd minute as she caught the ball from a pass on the left by junior Katie Hishmehand took it right down the middle, scoring into the left side of the net, which put the Golden Eagles on top, 2-0.

In the first period MU owned a 13-3 edge on shots with seven shots on goal. Freshman Amanda Engel recorded one save in the period catching a ball right down the middle.

Marquette's defense remained stellar in the second half as Rutgers took six shots with two on goal. Engel had one save with 15 minutes remaining in the game, but the Golden Eagles controlled the ball in their half of the pitch.

The Scarlet Knights had a few opportunities, but MU's defense held strong. Engel finished the day with five saves in 90 minutes of action. She notched her fourth victory this season and third shutout victory.

Marquette will return home to Valley Fields next weekend. The Golden Eagles host Louisville on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
