INDIANAPOLIS – The Marquette University women’s soccer team dropped its BIG EAST Conference lid-lifter to Butler, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.

The Golden Eagles (7-3-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) were out-shot 11-7 in the contest, but held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. The loss is MU’s second straight in a league opener and drops MU to 10-3 all-time in BIG EAST openers.

Butler (8-1-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) was led by Paige Monaghan’s two goals and one assist while Halle Stelbasky notched a pair of assists. Hannah Luedtke and Leonie Doege split time evenly in the BU net and combined for three saves.

The Bulldogs struck in the 13th minute off the foot of Paige Monaghan, who booted one past Henry on the right side to the upper 90. She nearly struck again in the 19th minute at nearly the same spot, but the ball hit the post.

Marquette’s two best looks came in the second half on shots by Kylie Sprecher and Hailey VanDerLeest that were saved just inside the left post. VanDerLeest’s look came in the 63th minute and Sprecher’s in the 84th.

BU’s second goal came just under 10 minutes into the second half from Gabrielle Lemkuil on a scramble right in front of the MU net. Butler’s Halle Stelbasky played the ball up the right side to Monaghan, who worked the ball deep along the goal line before sending it across into a mass of players near the net.

The two squads each used numerous subs and took hydration breaks toward the middle of each half as temperatures hovered near 90 degrees. All healthy MU field players to make the trip saw action.

Marquette returns to Milwaukee to host Villanova on Thursday at 7 p.m. Central time at Valley Fields before heading to New York to face St. John’s on Sunday, Oct. 1. Each match will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network though FOX Sports Go.
