MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team jumped out two-goal lead for the fourth consecutive match and held on for a 2-1 victory at Valley Fields on Thursday evening.

The Golden Eagles (5-5-2, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) picked up their first BIG EAST Conference win of the year after suffering a 3-2 defeat in double overtime at Creighton on Sunday. Marquette struck quickly to start the match with the third goals of the season from Darian Powell and Carrie Madden by the 26th minute.

Powell's goal was set up off a free kick from Madison Dunker, who sent the ball in on net before it was corralled at the goal line by senior midfielder Morgan Proffitt. Proffitt then slotted a pass through the goal area to Powell at the back post to put MU ahead in the fourth minute.

After 20 minutes of back-and-forth action, the Golden Eagles cushioned their lead when Madden, a redshirt sophomore, was able to sneak one past Seton Hall's defense in the 26th minute of the first half. Liz Bartels notched her first assist of the season on Madden's third goal in the last four matches.

Marquette began the second half looking to make sure its two-goal cushion did not evaporate for the fourth-straight contest and was able to do enough to hold on for the victory.

The Golden Eagles were put to the test after Seton Hall (4-5-1, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) scored an unexpected goal soon after the second half kicked off. Seton Hall's Katie Landes tallied her first goal of the season with a header during the 51st minute of play as MU keeper Maddy Henry was beat to the middle of the net from the post.

The Golden Eagles kick off Marquette Homecoming week on Sunday with a 1 p.m. showdown with St. John's at Valley Fields. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for a buy-one-get-one ticket offer in support of Marquette's "Stuff the Truck" food drive and the Hunger Task Force.

Sunday's match will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go.
