MILWAUKEE - Freshman goalkeeper Maddy Henry notched six saves and the Marquette University women's soccer team notched its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.

Senior Morgan Proffitt and junior Caroline Fink each scored goals for the Golden Eagles (6-5-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST), who have now won four of their last five contests and are over .500 for the first time this season. MU, which entered the weekend No. 39 in the NCAA’s RPI rankings, was out-shot 12-10 in the match, but posted two goals against a St John’s defense that entered the contest having allowed just four goals over its first 11 matches.

Proffitt's third goal of the year came in the 22nd minute to put the Golden Eagles ahead for the fifth-straight contest. Proffitt received a pass from Molly Pfeiffer and dribbled up the right flank before firing it back across the field to the far post. Her perfectly placed strike beat BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Diana Poulin to the upper 90 and was the first tally allowed by the senior since Sept. 11 at Portland.

Fink's tally came just under two minutes into the second frame off the first corner kick of the afternoon. Sophomore Leah Celarek sent the service into the box where Carrie Madden got her head on the ball and Fink kicked the ball across the goalline, at which point it was kicked back into the field of play by a SJU defender.

Marquette freshman keeper Maddy Henry made a spectacular diving save to preserve the clean sheet in the opening frame, barely getting her hand on a shot sent in by SJU's Sammi Scaffidi in the 29th minute. She also made another great effort to secure the shutout with just over one minute remaining in regulation with another save on Scaffidi.

Marquette resumes play on Thursday, Oct. 6 against Xavier at NKU Soccer Stadium in Highland Heights, Kentucky as Xavier's facilities recover from recent severe weather. The Golden Eagles will then head to Providence to face the Friars on Sunday afternoon.
