Golden Eagles Edge Xavier, 1-0
Oct. 5, 2014
MILWAUKEE-- The Marquette University women's soccer team (7-5-2, 3-0-1 BIG EAST) kept its six-match unbeaten streak alive, defeating the Xavier Musketeers (3-9-2, 0-4 BIG EAST), 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Sophomore Darian Powell's third goal of the season in the 37th minute proved be the difference maker and eventual game-winning tally in MU's fifth-straight home triumph. Powell put the Golden Eagles on the board after senior Haley Fritzlen launched a long distance pass into the box where senior Mary Luba corralled the ball and attempted a bicycle type kick. Luba's attempt resulted in a very nice pass right to Powell who struck the ball square to beat XU's Katie Markesbery. Powell's score was her first goal since her two goal performance against Loyola-Chicago in MU's season opener.
Despite just one tally on the scoreboard, Marquette was quite active on the offensive end against the Musketeers as they recorded 17 total shots compared to XU's seven. The Blue and Gold also held a 5-0 edge in cornerkicks.
Junior goalkeeper Amanda Engel collected three saves in the match en route to her fifth clean sheet of the season.
After the first 45 minutes of action the Golden Eagles recorded 10 shots compared to Xavier's three and four of MU's shots were on goal. Marquette held a 4-0 edge in cornerkicks, and Engel notched two saves in the first stanza.
The Golden Eagles had 20 players see action against Xavier.
With the win over Xavier, Marquette is now unbeaten in its last 32 BIG EAST Conference matches.
After a week of rest, the Golden Eagles return to the action when they travel to Georgetown Sunday, Oct. 12 for a noon Central time tilt against the Hoyas.
