HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Kentucky - Sophomore defender Leah Celarek scored her first career goal to lift the Marquette University women's soccer team past Xavier 1-0 on Thursday evening at NKU Soccer Stadium in Highland Heights, Kentucky.

The victory was the second in a row for the Golden Eagles (7-5-2, 3-1-0 BIG EAST) in shutout fashion after topping St. John's 2-0 at Valley Fields on Sunday afternoon. MU freshman goalkeeper Maddy Henry recorded her second-straight clean sheet and has not conceded a goal in the last 219:50 of game action.

Using the wider pitch at NKU, Marquette was able to utilize the extra space to set up a number of good scoring opportunities early in the contest and finally struck on Celarek's tally in the 40th minute. The Schaumburg, Illinois native made her second start in a row at left back, and after Cali Pyzdrowski subbed out, switched to right back before tallying the go-ahead marker.

Celarek received the ball from Liz Bartels who had dribbled through the center of the pitch and after looking off Meegan Johnston, dished the ball to Celarek who fired in from 25 yards. Her shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and fell down directly behind Xavier keeper Rachel Piccus.

Prior to Celarek's goal, Johnston had a pair of great looks at the net, but missed on each opportunity. Her first shot came up wide right in the 35th minute after beating Piccus, and her next look came three minutes later as she sent a ball over the cage.

The Musketeers were denied on one final attempt to score with under 30 seconds to play after Morgan Proffitt was called for a handball just outside the box on the right flank. The set piece came up empty as Ryley Bugay cleared the ball out of danger as time expired.

XU also hit a post on a good look in the second frame, but Henry had to make a save in each half for the clean sheet.

The Golden Eagles, who improve to 5-0-0 all-time against the Musketeers, outshot Xavier 9-2 in the first half and 16-5 for the contest.

The Golden Eagles next head to the East Coast for a noon Central time Sunday matchup with Providence at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go with Chris Fama on the call.
