Marquette Falls to Providence, 1-0
Oct. 8, 2017
MILWAUKEE – Providence scored a 17th minute goal and held the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard as the Marquette University women’s soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Friars on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Marquette (9-5-1, 2-3 BIG EAST) honored over 40 alumnae from its 25 years as a program during a special halftime ceremony, which included many former All-Americans, dating back to MU’s first season in 1993.
The win for the Friars (8-6, 3-2 BIG EAST) is their first ever over the Golden Eagles as Marquette entered the match 11-0-2 in the all-time series and had outscored PC, 32-2, in the previous 12 matchups.
The Friars’ lone tally came from Amber Birchwell on a ball played ahead by Theresa Durkee at the 16:17 mark. Durkee’s pass came from beyond midfield and led Birchwell past a pair of MU defenders, allowing her to beat MU keeper Maddy Henry from 15 yards out. Her goal snapped a PC scoreless streak against Marquette that stretched over 709:59 of game play, dating back to Oct. 10, 2010.
Emily Hess nearly had the equalizer in the 25th minute on a ball hit with pace from 25 yards out that rang off the crossbar over the middle of the net.
Marquette tallied 10 shots to Providence’s 11 and Darian Powell led MU with two on the afternoon. The squad had multiple opportunities for an equalizer off their six corner kicks, but could not find anyone in front of the net.
The Golden Eagles have their final mid-week bye in conference action before hosting Xavier at Valley Fields on Saturday, Oct. 14 for Senior Night. Powell, Eli Beard, Caroline Fink, Madison Dunker and Kirsten Timmer will all be honored on the field in a special ceremony.
