CINCINNATI - The Marquette women's soccer team came up with a big Conference USA victory, defeating Cincinnati, 2-0. The Golden Eagles (6-6-1, 2-2 C-USA) played one of the best all-around games of the season in defeating the Bearcats (3-9-1, 1-3-0 C-USA) who were the preseason league favorites.

The Golden Eagles were aggressive offensivley, outshooting Cincinnati 18-12. Marquette had 10 of its shots in the first half. Freshman forward Ashley George scored her first goal of the season on her only shot of the contest in the 10th minute. George took a quick shot from 11 yards after getting a cross from senior midfielder Anne Ioder.

It was your classic Marquette/Cincinnati battle. Hard fought and tightly contested on both ends," head coach Markus Roeders said. "I though the way we set up the first goal was great. Anne Ioder was able to draw a defender to her and Ashley George was able to have a great vision to hit the ball far post."

Marquette held Cincinnati to five shots on goal, all of which junior goalkeeper Katie Bissen stopped. Sherry Slye made seven stops in the first half for Cincinnati. Tracy Hale stopped six in the second half for the Bearcats. Freshman forward Beth McGill was the most active of all Marquette players. She had five shots, four of which were on goal.

Hale couldn't get her hands on a blast from 30 yards from sophomore defender Sarah Uyenishi. She capitalized in the 49th minute after controlling the ball off a turnover.

"This had everything that the games in the past have had," Roeders said. "You have to give Cincinnati a lot of credit. Both of us were sort of desperate for win in conference. "

Marquette faces Louisville on the road on Sunday, October 12 at 1 p.m. (EDT).
