No. 22/15 Marquette Clinches BIG EAST American Division Championship
Oct. 14, 2012
MILWAUKEE - Senior Rachel Brown and junior Taylor Madigan of the Marquette women's soccer team tallied both goals to help the Golden Eagles defeat Syracuse, 2-0 at Valley Fields on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Marquette wins the American Division in BIG EAST Conference play for the fourth consecutive year.
Marquette improves to 12-2-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the BIG EAST, and extends its unbeaten streak to 10 games. Syracuse falls to 8-6-2 overall and 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play.
The field conditions affected play throughout the game as the rain fell steadily throughout the contest and created a muddy playing surface. Marquette persevered however, when Brown headed junior Maegan Kelly's corner kick to put Marquette on the board early, 1-0, at the 2:37 mark.
The Golden Eagles finished out the first half with 11 total shots.
In the second half, Madigan extended the lead to 2-0 as she caught a rebound from senior Lisa Philbin and sent the ball to the back of the net for a goal. It was Madigan's seventh goal this season.
MU did not give up a shot on goal until the 78th minute when freshman goalkeeper Amanda Engel recorded a save. She finished the game with two saves and played a complete 90 minutes. Engel is 8-0-1 in the net this season.
The Golden Eagles once again controlled possession of the ball throughout the game and out-shot the Orange, 18-8.
Marquette will close out the regular season at home on Saturday, Oct. 20 for Senior Night. Kick-off begins at 7:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles will also host quarterfinal action of the BIG EAST Championship home at Valley Fields on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1:00 p.m. The opponent has yet to be determined.
