Marquette falls to No. 7/2 Georgetown 2-0
Oct. 16, 2016
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s soccer team was held scoreless in a 2-0 loss to No. 7/2 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields to suffer its first defeat since its BIG EAST Conference opener on Sept. 25.
The Golden Eagles (8-5-2, 4-1-0 BIG EAST) held an 11-9 edge on shots against the Hoyas but were not able to fight back after having a goal negated midway through the opening stanza. The loss snaps a four-match winning streak for Marquette, which had not given up a goal in the previous three matches.
With multiple opportunities, Marquette appeared to break through first in the 24th minute on a Liz Bartels goal that ended up being disallowed after the officials conferred. Bartels charged into the box on a Cali Pyzdrowski cross that she was able to settle and fire into the net. The senior appeared to dislodge the ball from the Georgetown keeper’s hands with her upper body and the officials ruled a hand ball on the play.
Sophomore Amanda Carolan was able to put the Hoyas (12-1-2, 4-0-2 BIG EAST) on the board roughly three minutes later as Marquette surrendered its first goal in 336:50 since its match against Seton Hall on Sept. 29. Georgetown held a 5-2 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks through the first 45 minutes before adding its second goal of the day in the 50th minute on Carolan’s second tally.
Carolan’s goal to put GU up 2-0 was set up by Grace Damaska, who slotted a ball through the box to Carolan at the edge of the goal area at the right post.
The Golden Eagles resume action on Thursday, Oct. 20 in a 3 p.m. Central time matchup with Villanova in Pennsylvania. The match will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go.
