Bares Scores Twice as No. 22 Marquette Shuts Out Louisville, 2-0
Oct. 18, 2009 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Brittany Bares scored two first-half goals to lead No. 22 Marquette over Louisville, 2-0, Sunday at Cardinal Park. The Golden Eagles earned another crucial road win and improve to 11-4-2 overall, 5-2-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Cardinals fall to 4-11-0 overall, 1-7-0 in league play. "Great win for our team! It was an expected challenge, but our squad responded," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Brittany was very opportunistic and the goals couldn't have come at a better time. She put herself in the right place finishing the first one and the second was more like a cross that became a shot and a goal. It is a great result and earning another shutout is excellent. Louisville was a team that still had fight and is as good as we thought; give them credit." After a sluggish start, Marquette found its rhythm and went ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute (29:27). Lindsay Page got in front of a Louisville clear, got her foot on the ball and pushed it to Bares. Bares finished it off and knocked it in past Taylor Vancil. She scored her second goal 58 seconds later at the 30:25 mark as she drilled her shot from 25 yards out to the top left corner. The Golden Eagles looked to score more to cushion its lead with sophomore Rachael Sloan, junior Lauren Thut and senior Michelle Compty all putting shots on goal in the final 60 minutes of play. Overall, Marquette dominated play holding the Cardinals to just six shots, while the Golden Eagles fired off 15, five of which were on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kulla earned her 11th shutout of the season and made three stops on the day. Vancil registered three saves for the game. "We started out sluggish and Louisville had a couple of chances in the first 25 minutes. Kulla came up big on a close range shot and Louisville put another ball wide shortly after she had to rush off her line. As the game went on, we dominated more and more of the play and a couple of nice chances should have been converted, " said Roeders.
The Golden Eagles will close out its last weekend of regular season play in the Empire State against first against Syracuse on Friday, Oct. 23 before taking on St. John’s on Sunday, Oct. 25. "We have another weekend of great competition ahead of us and it is good to be in the drivers seat. The American Division is still wide open and anybodies to win, we are glad to be in the mix," said Roeders.
