Marquette claims 2-0 win at Villanova
Oct. 20, 2016
VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania - The Marquette University women's soccer team earned its fifth BIG EAST Conference victory of the season on Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout of Villanova at Campolo Field at the Higgins Soccer Complex.
Senior Liz Bartels scored her second goal in the last three matches for the Golden Eagles (9-6-2, 5-2-0 BIG EAST), who went ahead 2-0 on a Villanova own goal in the 47th minute.
The victory was the fourth clean sheet of the season for freshman goalkeeper Maddy Henry, who tied a career best with eight saves in the victory.
The opening half featured 20 total shots with 12 of those coming from Marquette, which led 1-0 after 45 minutes. Bartels posted a frame-high five shots in the opening stanza and was the first to score at the 19:08 mark off a feed from Molly Pfeiffer. Bartels received the ball from Pfeiffer towards the left side of the box and fired a shot in over VU keeper Emily Harris.
Junior midfielder Caroline Fink had another great look in the 36th minute near the same spot on a ball chipped in by Bartels. Fink advanced on Harris but the ball missed just wide at right post after directing the ball of the side of her foot.
The second goal for the Golden Eagles came just 1:15 into the second half on a cross played into the box by Fink from the right flank. Fink's pass into a group of players hit off Villanova freshman Kristin Barbour and into the Wildcats' net.
The Golden Eagles resume play on Sunday at Valley Fields in a 1 p.m. matchup with Butler, broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go.
