Marquette Keeps Pace in BIG EAST with 1-0 Win at Butler
Oct. 25, 2015
INDIANAPOLIS - Darian Powell's third goal in the last two matches was enough to push the Marquette University women's soccer team past Butler in the BIG EAST Conference standings with a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis.
The Golden Eagles (8-6-4, 5-2-1 BIG EAST) picked up three points with the win to keep them ahead of Providence in the conference standings and push them past BU, both of whom have 15 points on the year.
"I'm elated that we won here today," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. "This is a difficult environment, playing Butler, but overall the setting is tricky to play. I thought we really had a nice first half and made the most out of us playing and then taking advantage of the chances that we had. The goal was terrific. It was a bang, bang play with three players involved and Darian putting it away. It is great to see her getting back on the scoreboard after Thursday. She's had a great week and we've been looking for that."
Powell's goal came in the 32nd minute off a Jacie Jermier set piece and touched three Golden Eagles without hitting the ground before finding the net. Jermier's second corner of the afternoon found Molly Pfeiffer in the center of the box who headed the ball to Erin Holland on the near side to a distance of about six yards. Holland then sent the ball across to Powell at the far side as the junior posted her team-best sixth goal of the year.
The Golden Eagles fired seven shots on the afternoon to Butler's five, of which four came in the second half of action. MU held a 4-1 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes and capitalized on one of their two corner kicks in the frame.
Today's result is Marquette's first road victory in BIG EAST action and its first win away from home since a 2-1 triumph at Michigan on Aug. 23. MU is unbeaten over its last five matches (4-0-1) and has recorded four shutouts, including three 1-0 wins, over that time.
The Golden Eagles will head to DePaul on Friday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. for their regular season finale at Wish Field.
