MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Marquette women's soccer team got an early goal from senior Allison Mallams, but was unable to hold on to its lead falling to No. 19/23 West Virginia, 3-1, at Dick Dlesk Stadium Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 12-3-4, and 5-3-3 in BIG EAST play while the Mountaineers improve to 13-4-1, 9-1-1 in conference action.

Due to Louisville defeating Georgetown in overtime (1-0) on Sunday, Marquette will play at Louisville in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. ET.

"I give a lot of credit to our team for how they competed today," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Unfortunately, we didn't execute a full 90 minutes and West Virginia is extremely dangerous in their attacking."

The Mountaineers potent offense reigned as WVU out-shot Marquette, 21-10, including a 12-4 shots on goal advantage. For the game, senior goalkeeper Laura Boyer made nine saves, while Kerri Butler stopped three MU shots.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead at the 20:45 mark. Christy Zwolski found her favorite target, Mallams, and delivered a through ball near the top of the box. Mallams fired her shot just inside the left post and out of reach for WVU keeper Kerri Butler.

"It was a beautiful strike from Allison Mallams. I thought we were extremely organized in the first half and created a couple of good chances," Roeders said.

West Virginia got the equalizer and added two more goals in a four minute span in the second half to go ahead 3-1. Marquette found itself unlucky with its opportunities and could not relinquish the deficit during the remainder of the match.

Carolyn Blank scored the game-tying goal in the 57th minute, and BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, Ashley Banks, registered WVU's second and third goals of the afternoon.

"We started composed in the second half, but the spell where they scored their three goals was led by multiple mistakes and questionable calls. All of that is secondary because we had some lapses defensively. Despite those setbacks, we kept playing hard and our last 20 minutes were very solid," said Roeders.

The final 20 minutes of the game were very tightly contested between both teams. Freshman Julia Victor found herself in front of the goal, but couldn't finish, and Mallams' final attempt was saved by Butler. Mallams registered three shots on target for the game.

Marquette will have a week to prepare for its quarterfinal match at Louisville. A win over the Cardinals would put Marquette in the BIG EAST semifinal on Friday, Nov. 9, in Morgantown, W. Va.

"We are looking forward and have a whole week to get ready for our BIG EAST Quarterfinal match. There are no easy games left, but that's a given at the end of the year. We have much to play for and we will continue to work hard going forward."
