INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- The Marquette University women's soccer team (9-8-2, 5-3-1) fell 2-1 to the Butler Bulldogs (9-8-2, 3-4-2) in Indianapolis Friday afternoon, finishing up the 2014 regular season and claiming the No.4 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament.

The Golden Eagles were unable to come all the way back after spotting Butler a 2-0 lead. Despite winning the shot battle 10 to five, and putting more shots on goal than their opponent, MU fell on the road.

Butler got on the board first when Stephanie Kaylor scored the first point of the match off of a cornerkick attempt in the 36th minute. The senior defender, Kaylor's score was the first of her season, and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge late in the first stanza.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute when Sophia Maccagnone collected her fifth goal of the season on a free kick from around 20 yards out.

The Golden Eagles responded quickly, scoring just over a minute after Butler had grabbed the 2-0 advantage. After she was fouled, senior midfielder Mary Luba converted on a penalty kick to close the gap to just 2-1. Luba's score was her sixth of the season, which is tied for the team's high mark with teammate Darian Powell.

Trailing 2-1, the Golden Eagles ramped up the offensive intensity with just 20 minutes to go, notching several shots on goal. Sophomore Meegan Johnston challenged Butler's Mackenzie Hopkins twice in the final 15 minutes but was not able to break through against the junior goalkeeper who finished with four saves. Powell's shot that sailed high in the 85th minute was Marquette's final attempt at matching the score.

After not recording a corner in the first half, Marquette recorded five attempts in the second half and held the overall edge in corners at five to four.

In the first, the Bulldogs held a narrow edge in shots at four to three, and attempted two cornerkicks while Marquette failed to line up a corner in the first 45 minutes. Butler and Marquette each managed one shot on goal. Alex Heffron recorded Marquette's lone shot on goal of the first half in the 20th minute. Liz Bartels also had a pair of shot attempts blocked.

With their loss to Butler, the Golden Eagles are now slated to return to action Tuesday, Nov.4 as a No.4 seed when they host the No. 5 seed the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament. MU's opponent in the opening round hinges upon the result of the Villanova at Providence match will occur at 6 p.m. Central time tonight.
