Nov. 2, 2013
MILWAUKEE--The BIG EAST Champion No. 14/7 Marquette University women's soccer team (16-3-0, 9-0-0) capped off a senior night celebration with a 2-1 victory over Butler (11-6-2, 4-5-0) on Saturday evening at Valley Fields. With the victory the Golden Eagles went undefeated, 9-0 in conference play and concluded the regular season unbeaten for the second consecutive season.
A pre-game ceremony honoring seniors Katie Hishmeh, Cara Jacobson, Emily Jacobson, Maegan Kelly, Vanessa Legault-Cordisco, Taylor Madigan, Kate Reigle and Ashley Stemmeler kicked off the evening's festivities, which also included a post-game awards presentation.
Kelly got the Golden Eagles off to a quick start, when she found the back of the net in the 12th minute following a brilliant pass from Reigle. The goal gave Marquette an early 1-0 lead, which would hold strong through the rest of the first half.
MU held a 10-2 advantage on shots in the first frame and a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.
Marquette had a few chances in the second half, including a shot from Kelly in the 64th minute that Butler's keeper sent over the crossbar. In the 81st minute, freshman Ashley Handwork notched touched the ball after Stemmeler passed to the top from junior Mary Luba and played the ball into the net, which gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Butler forward Elise Kotsakis kept the Bulldogs in the game as she scored a goal which brought them within one point in the 86th minute of play, but MU's defense made a few key stops and the Golden Eagles sealed their ninth conference victory this year.
Marquette dominated the game with 22 shots, including seven on goal, while holding Butler to just four total shots and two on goal. In net, sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Engel totaled one save in 90 minutes of play.
The Golden Eagles will wait to see the winner of the No. 4/5 seed game in the BIG EAST tournament quarterfinals to be played Tuesday, Nov. 5 at campus sites. Marquette will host the 2013 BIG EAST semifinals and championship game Nov. 8 and 10, respectively. The Golden Eagles will play their contest on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
