Marquette Advances to BIG EAST Finals with Victory Over St. John's

MILWAUKEE--For the second straight season, the Marquette women's soccer team (17-3-0) will play in the BIG EAST Championship finals after the No. 1 seed Golden Eagles blanked No. 4 seed St. John's, 2-0, at Valley Fields on Friday evening.
Junior Mary Luba scored the game-winning goal and got MU on the board first in the 36th minute after she caught a rebound from senior Maegan Kelly's corner kick and bounced the ball into the back of the net.
Kelly added to the Golden Eagles' total in the 53rd minute as she turned around a St. John's defender with a long shot from the middle. Classmate Cara Jacobson handed out the assist on Kelly's 10th goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles kept attacking St. John's (11-5-3) throughout the entire game and dominated with a 25-3 margin on shots, including 12-1 shots on goal advantage. Eighteen of MU's shots occurred in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Engel recorded one save in a key play late in the game to keep the Red Storm scoreless.
St. John's goalkeeper Diana Poulin recorded 10 saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of play.
Marquette will face No. 3 seed DePaul in the championship final Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. CT. The Blue Demons shutout No. 2 seed Georgetown, 1-0, in the earlier semifinal game. The Golden Eagles walked away with a 1-0 shutout at DePaul when the two squads met in regular season play.
