No. 12/9 Marquette Shuts Out Central Michigan, 1-0

MILWAUKEE - Rachael Sloan found the back of the net in the 61st minute to lead the No. 12/9 Marquette University women's soccer team over Central Michigan, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday evening at Valley Fields. Marquette will face Wisconsin in second round action at Valley Fields Sunday at 1 p.m.
The first round win is the Golden Eagles' first in three seasons while improving to 16-4-2 overall. Central Michigan completes the 2010 season, 16-5-1.Play was back and forth for the majority of the game with both teams creating scoring chances. Marquette owned the edge in the shots column, 12-8, and put eight of those attempts on goal. After a scoreless first half, Marquette pressured early in the second frame. Two minutes into the half, Stephanie Vasos fed Sloan a pass from the left wing. Sloan broke away and beat her defender to go 1 v 1 with Central Michigan goalkeeper, Shay Mannino. Sloan was unable to finish her chance, as the initial shot and her follow-up attempt were both smothered by Mannino.
The Golden Eagles continued their push launching five shots and taking one corner kick over the next 11 minutes until Sloan capitalized at the 60:39 mark. Rachel Brown served in the ball from the left side to Sloan who slid on to the end of the serve and poked the ball in past Mannino for the score.
Following the score, the Golden Eagles didn't let up and looked for second goal to cushion its lead, but Central Michigan didn't back down either and the Marquette backline came through hold the Chippewas scoreless. With its help, goalkeeper Natalie Kulla earned her 10th shutout of the season while making one stop. Kerry McBride did her part to help preserve the shutout as she stepped in and prevented Laura Twidle's attempt from crossing the goal line in the 74th minute.
In the first game of the day, Wisconsin edged UW-Milwaukee, 2-1. Laurie Nosbusch and Kodee Williams each tallied for the Badgers (11-4-4) who advance to the second round for the second straight season.
