Madigan's Golden Goal Sends No. 12/19 MU to the NCAA Championship Second Round

MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Taylor Madigan's golden goal in the 97th minute was all the No. 12/19 Marquette University women's soccer team needed to defeat Toledo, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Championship Saturday evening at Valley Fields.


The Golden Eagles (18-3-0) advance to the second round of the NCAA Championship where they will play No. 4 seed Penn State on Friday, Nov. 18 at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT.

Toledo ends its season 14-6-2 overall.

Junior Lisa Philbin sent in a cross from the nearside and was picked up by Madigan. After controlling the ball, Madigan sent a close range right-footed blast to the near side beating goal keeper Vicki Traven. Sophomore Megan Kelly was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Marquette's offensive attack was dominant in the early minutes of the first half. Rachel Brown, Kate Reigle and Katie Hishmeh each tallied shots on goal for MU in the opening 23 minutes, while Toledo only registered one shot in the first half 45 minutes of play.

Following the intermission, the Golden Eagles' continued to apply pressure to the Rockets back-third. In the 61st minute, senior Kerry McBride put a header on net from Kelly's corner kick that Traven managed to save. Traven had seven saves in the losing effort.

Midway through the second half Toledo had its two best chances to score. The Rockets tallied two shots within 40 seconds, including Nicole Gyurgyik's shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar.

With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Marquette almost broke the tie following a Toledo foul in the Rockets' backfield. Kelly sent a cross into box off a free kick that found Madigan on the far side, who put a shot on net that was turned away by Traven.

In overtime the Golden Eagles had a corner kick and Lindsey Page put a shot on goal before Madigan scored her eighth goal of the season and the game-winner.


Game Notes
• Marquette advances to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the second straight season. Marquette is 7-7-3 all-time in the NCAA Championship, 6-3-1 in first round games. It is the sixth time in program history Marquette has advanced to the second round.
• Marquette's senior class of Natalie Kulla, Kerry McBride and Lindsey Page is 2-2-2 in the NCAA Championship play.
Taylor Madigan scored her eighth goal of the season, sixth game winner. Madigan owns two overtime game winners (vs Notre Dame, vs Toledo) this season.
• The Golden Eagles earned their 13th shutout of the season, while senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla earned her 43rd shutout of her career. Kulla is two shutouts shy of breaking the NCAA Division I all-time shutouts record (44).
• Marquette has needed overtime five times this season and stands 5-0 in those games. Marquette is 39-14-33 all-time under Markus Roeders when overtime is needed.
• Marquette moves to 12-1-0 at Valley Fields this season and is 137-35-14 all-time on its home turf. The Golden Eagles stand 5-2-2 in NCAA Championship games at Valley Fields.
Maegan Kelly's assist of Taylor Madigan's game winner marked her 39th point of the season. Marquette is 23-0 all-time when Kelly registers a point.
• Marquette moves to 2-0-1 all-time against Toledo, 14-2-1 all-time against team in the MAC.
