No. 12/9 Women's Soccer Advances to the NCAA Championship Third Round on Penalty Kicks

MILWAUKEE - The No. 12/9 Marquette University women's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Championship Third Round for the second time in school history after edging Wisconsin, 5-4, in penalty kicks Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields. Both squads were even at 2-2 following regulation and two overtime periods.




After missing the first penalty kick, Marquette (16-4-3) netted its next five while Natalie Kulla stopped Wisconsin's (11-4-5) fifth attempt and the Badgers' sixth and final shot went wide.

In a must-make situation, senior Julia Victor powered the fifth penalty kick past Wisconsin's Michele Dalton, who was able to get a hand on the shot but could not stop it. Wisconsin senior Darcy Riley could have secured the win for the Badgers with a finish on the fifth penalty kick, but BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Natalie Kulla made a diving stop to keep the Golden Eagles alive.

On the sixth penalty kick, junior Rachael Sloan netted her shot to top shelf for Marquette. Needing to make the last penalty kick, freshman Deja Walker's shot went wide left as the Golden Eagles claimed the match and advanced to face Florida State.



Marquette took an early lead in the first half as senior Rosie Malone-Povolny drew a foul on a hard tackle. From the ensuing free kick 30 yards out, Lauren Thut found junior Kerry McBride, who headed in her second goal of the season at the 10:12 mark.

With the season on the line, both teams responded out of the intermission, each registering seven shots in the second half. Marquette and Wisconsin combined for three goals within two minutes during the frame.

Wisconsin sophomore midfielder Monica Lam-Feist netted the equalizer in the 66th minute from 25 yards out. Her shot into the top left corner of the net made it past Kulla. Just over a minute later, Lam-Feist added another goal to give the Badgers their first lead of the match. Defender Lindsey Johnson found Lam-Feist, whose shot from 20 yards curled just inside the far post.

Down 2-1, the Golden Eagles responded just 40 seconds after Wisconsin's second goal. A serve by freshman Katie Hishmeh found the head of sophomore Lisa Philbin, whose third goal of the season went just inside the far post.

Wisconsin finished the match with eight shots on goal, while Marquette concluded play with five shots on goal and 12 total shots. Laurie Nosusch, who tallied the a goal in Friday's match against Milwaukee, led all players with five shots. Senior Ashley Bares tallied three shots, two on frame, to lead the Golden Eagles. Neither team recorded a shot in the second overtime. Kulla tallied six saves while Dalton finished with three.

The Golden Eagles will face No. 2 seed Florida State (15-5-1). The Seminoles advanced to the Third Round after defeating USF, 2-1, in Tallahassee, Fla.

Game date, time and location have yet to be determined.

Game Notes • The Golden Eagles are 6-6-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 1-2-2, in second round games. Marquette last advanced to the third round in 2005 following a 1-0 win over Milwaukee at Valley Fields.
• Marquette is 5-2-2 in NCAA Tournament play when those games are played at Valley Fields.
Lauren Thut's assist of McBride's goal was her 13th of the season. The 13 assists are tied for second on MU's all-time single-season list.
Natalie Kulla's six saves matched a season-high. She has 179 for her career to rank sixth on the all-time saves list.
•Marquette moves to 5-6-2 all-time against Wisconsin and 1-1-1 when playing each other in the NCAA Tournament.
• The shootout marks the third time in program history the Golden Eagles had an NCAA Tournament game decided on PKs, and the first time the Golden Eagles have advanced on PKs.
• The Golden Eagles are one of four BIG EAST Conference teams who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown, West Virginia and Notre Dame all won their respective second round games to move on.
