Marquette Advances to the NCAA Third Round with 3-1 Victory over Princeton

PROVO, Utah - The Marquette women's soccer team (18-2-2) will make a return trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 2010 as the Golden Eagles defeat Princeton (14-4-1) in the second round of the NCAA Championship.

Junior Taylor Madigan scored the go-ahead goal for MU in the 53rd minute after she scored on the far right side of the post off of a corner kick from classmate Maegan Kelly. It was a career-best ninth goal of the season for Madigan.

The Golden Eagles found themselves trailing in the first half for the first time since September as Princeton got on the board first in the 11th minute with a goal from Lauren Lazo as she hit the right corner of the net from just outside the box.

With 45 seconds remaining in the first half, sophomore Mady Vicker scored to tie the game at 1-1 after junior Cara Jacobson fed her the ball from just outside the box. Vicker took a shot from inside the box on the right side to beat Princeton's diving goalkeeper and hit the back left corner of the net. It was her fourth goal of the season.

In the first half, MU held a narrow edge on shots, 4-2 and just a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Two of the Golden Eagles' four shots were on goal.

In the games' 82nd minute, Marquette extended its lead to 3-1 as senior Ally Miller caught a cross from inside the box to score off of a corner kick from Jacobson. It was Miller's career-best seventh goal this season.

In goal, Engel won her 14th goal of the season and moves to 14-0-1 on the season. She had one save in the game.

The Golden Eagles owned a 10-3 advantage on shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kick for the game.

Marquette will face the winner of No. 1 seed BYU/Auburn on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
