Women's Soccer Announces 2010 Recruiting Class

MILWAUKEE - Marquette women's soccer head coach Markus Roeders has announced MU’s signing class of 2010. Seven student-athletes have committed to continue their academic and athletic endeavors at Marquette University starting in the fall. The class boasts teammates from regional club champions, plentiful Olympic Development experience and young women who truly emulate the title "student-athlete." The incoming class includes Emily Jacobson (Shorewood, Wis.), Cara Jacobson (Shorewood, Wis.), Maegan Kelly (Kansas City, Mo.), Julia Loyd (Minneapolis, Minn.), Taylor Madigan (Dane, Wis.), Kate Reigle (Brookfield, Wis.) and Sofie Schunk (Albuquerque, N.M.).
2010 Marquette Freshmen Class
“We are thrilled that these seven student-athletes will join Marquette and our program in the fall. All of them are excellent students, we love them as people and each brings a high level of soccer talent to our squad,” said BIG EAST Coach of the Year Markus Roeders. “Once they will join us on campus this fall, we expect them to contribute right away to our future success.” “With the addition of Sofie and Julia, we accomplished our goal to add quality depth to the goalkeeping position. They will push Natalie Kulla to another level while competing for playing time,” said Roeders. “By welcoming Emily, Taylor, Cara, Kate and Maegan to Marquette, we are adding great soccer talent to our program. They bring soccer knowledge, technical skill, goal scoring finesse and versatility to our team, which will make our squad better this year, and beyond. All of them are comfortable playing up to three or four different positions, a great luxury at our level. They have been well coached and know how to play against the top teams/players due to their commitment of year-around club soccer,” said Roeders “In addition, all of them have played at the highest level with the Regional Olympic Development programs,” added Roeders. “Combine that with their ODP International experiences and these ladies have a leg up on making a quick transition to Marquette and collegiate play. Jacobson decided to forego playing high school soccer in order to continue with FC Milwaukee year-round. Along with twin sister Emily Jacobson, and fellow incoming freshmen Kate Reigle and Taylor Madigan, Cara Jacobson helped lead the FC Milwaukee to State Championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010 and the Regional Cup Semifinals in 2007 and 2008. Jacobson is a four-year member of the Wisconsin State ODP team (2005-09) and is a member of the current Regional Pool. She earned three letters in track at Shorewood High School and is a two-time team captain (2009, 2010). Roeders on Cara Jacobson: She is getting better all the time…Very good on the ball and loves to attack…Sees the field well and has a nose to find the goal…Can play any spot in the midfield or up front…Cara is athletic and she has the ability to get past defenders with speed and skill. Cara Jacobson on why she chose Marquette: "I chose to attend Marquette because of its great academics, and the close family feel that the university has. The soccer program is great as well. I loved all the coaches and the how close the team was. I like going to a smaller school that's in a city as well as being close to home so my family can still come to my games.”
Emily Jacobson
Jacobson joins twin sister Cara, and fellow incoming freshmen Taylor Madigan and Kate Riegle from FC Milwaukee. She helped the team to the regional semifinals in 2007 and 2008 and state shampionships in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Jacobson was a member of the ODP Regional Pool from 2007-2009, the ODP Regional Team in 2007 and 2008, and the ODP State Team from 2005-2009. In 2007, Jacobson participated in the U16 National Development Camp. She traveled with the ODP Regional Teams to Germany in 2008, and Portugal and Spain in 2009. She was also a two-time participant in the Coral Springs Thanksgiving Interregional. Jacobson earned letters in basketball and track at Shorewood High School. She currently serves as the captain of the track and field team in 2010. Roeders on Emily Jacobson: Emily is a leader…She is very technical and has excellent vision of the field...Competitive and strives to be the best…Great height and a threat in the air…Can play in the back, midfield or even as a forward…It will be interesting to see where our team needs her the most. Emily Jacobson on why she chose Marquette: "I like the combination of academic and athletic challenge Marquette offers. Also, I'm interested in the dental school at Marquette. Lastly, the combination of players, coaches, and their coaching philosophies created an exciting, fun, and new environment that I wanted a to a part of."
Maegan Kelly
A four-year letterwinner and two-time captain for St. Teresa's Academy, Kelly earned first team all-state and Kansas City All-Metro accolades following both her freshman and sophomore seasons. Kelly also picked up first-team all-district honors during every season in which she competed. She currently ranks second in St. Teresa's record books in goals scored in a single season, netting 39 as a sophomore. A four-year starter, she helped the Stars to a conference championship in 2007 and a district championship in 2008. A member of the ODP State Team from 2005-2009, Kelly helped lead Missouri to a third place finish in the ODP National Championships in 2008. She attended the ODP Region II camp from 2005-2009 and was an ODP National Camp attendee from 2008-2010. During her tenure with the KC Comets Select, Kelly led the Comets to four appearances in the Kansas State Cup Finals, including two Kansas State Cup Championships in 2003 and 2006. She was a member of the KC Dynamos team that captured the U23 Tournament of Champions Championship in 2009. Maegan’s older sister Katie was a member of the Marquette women’s soccer team from 2005-08. Roeders on Kelly: Very competitive and tough as nails…Loves to compete and win...Excels when she has the ball at her feet and/or can create for herself and others…Plays well with her back to the goal as well and an excellent striker of the ball. Maegan Kelly on why she chose Marquette: "Every time I visited Marquette I felt like I just belonged here. I want to be part of a great soccer family and play at the highest level of competition which you get in the BIG EAST”
Julia Loyd
Loyd is a three-year letterwinner for Edina High School. During her tenure at Edina, Loyd helped lead the Hornets to a fourth place finish in the Minnesota State High School Tournament in 2009, and earn Minnesota Section II Championships in 2006 and 2009, Minnesota Section II Runner-Ups in 2008 and two consecutive Classic Lake Conference Championships. Loyd was a member of the Florida State ODP Team in 2006. She was also a member of the Minnesota State Pool from 2008-2009. Loyd also participated in the Soccer Plus Camps National Training Center from 2007-2009. Roeders on Loyd: Athletic, talented and a high level of fearlessness…She is an excellent shot blocker with quick reaction to the ball…She communicates well and takes control of the 18-yard box and the space behind the defenders…We expect her to challenge the two other goalkeepers. Julia Loyd on why she chose Marquette: "Marquette was my first choice of universities for both soccer and academics. The reputation of the team is well known nationally. I'm really looking forward to being a part of the "family" at MU and working with such knowledgeable coaches. From what I've seen and whom I've met, I know Marquette is the right choice for me. Milwaukee is a great city and will have so much to offer in the years during and after my time at Marquette. I plan on studying communications and the program at MU is renowned.”
Taylor Madigan
A standout from Waunakee Community High School, Madigan collected a plethora of accolades during her junior year including the Wisconsin Coaches Player of the Year, the Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year, all-area player of the year, first team all-state, all-area and all-conference recognition and honorable mention on the ESPN RISE Spring Girls All-American Team. She was also selected as the team offense MVP following every season in which she competed. As a sophomore, Madigan received first team all-state, all-Area and all-conference honors and as a freshman she earned second team all-area and first team all-conference nods. She was an ODP Region II Team Member from 2008-2009 and attended the Inter-Regional in Mississippi during both of those years, and traveled with the Region II ODP Team to Brazil in the Spring of 2009. In 2010, Madigan led FC Milwaukee U18 to the Wisconsin State Championship. During her time with FC Waunakee, the team also earned regional and conference championships in 2007 and 2009, and the Division I State Runner- Up honors, and Sectional, Regional and Conference Championships in 2008. Roeders on Madigan:Super quick on the ball and plays much bigger than her size...She is active and loves to get the ball at her feet…Loves to attack and make other players look good…A finisher who excels coming from a midfield position but can also play as a forward. Taylor Madigan on why she chose Marquette: "Marquette academics are second to none. After my first visit with the team and coaches I could feel the closeness and respect they had for one another and I knew I wanted to be part of that. Being on campus you also sense a support system that goes beyond the team and includes all the students and staff at Marquette. Having so many people wanting you to succeed is like having your family right with you and that there are no limits. I will always appreciate the opportunity to be part of Marquette University and something so big. Great city, college, team and great friendships." Kate Reigle
A two-time All State selection, Reigle led Brookfield East High School to back-to-back Regional Championships in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, Reigle led the Spartans to the state semifinals, picking up sectional regional and Greater Metro Championships along the way. In 2008 and 2009, Reigle earned first team all-conference and second team all-area accolades. She was also named team MVP following her junior season. Reigle was a member of the Wisconsin State ODP Team from 2004-2009 and the ODP State Pool in 2007, 2009 and 2010. She also participated in the Region II Team Portugal event in 2009 and the Region II Inter-Regionals in 2008. A member of FC Milwaukee, Reigle, along with fellow incoming freshman Emily and Cara Jacobson, helped lead the team to State Championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010. She also earned two letters respectively in tennis and basketball at Brookfield East. Roeders on Reigle: Very technical who knows how to finish...She wants to attack defenders and create for herself and others…Great balance which makes it hard to knock her off the ball…A nose for the goal and comfortable to play in a central or wide position. Kate Reigle on why she chose Marquette: “I wanted to attend a medium size school in the Midwest that has strong academics and a great soccer program both of which I have found at Marquette. I have followed Marquette soccer for many years and have always thought it would be a good fit for me. I really like the coaches and the "family" team environment.”
Sofie Schunk
Schunk was a two-sport standout for La Cueva High School, earning myriad of honors for her performance on both the pitch and the track. In 2009, Schunk was recognized as one of the premier soccer players in New Mexico earning nominations for both the all-state player of the year and the Wendy's High School Heisman. As a junior, Schunk was named to the first team all-district and all-Metro teams, as well as, earning a second team all-state nod and academic all-district honors in both 2009 and 2010. As a captain, she helped lead the Bears to back-to-back district championships and the New Mexico Big-School 5A Runner-up in 2009. Schunk was also a member of the ODP State Pool from 2006-2009. Schunk was a member of the Rio Vista Sparks from 2000-2009. During her tenure with the program, the Sparks reached the state semifinals for three consecutive years. Schunk was also a member of the state champion 4x400m relay team in 2007. In 2008, Schunk was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Track and Field Team of the Year. Roeders on Schunk: She is extremely athletic, quick-footed, technically sound and reads the game very well…Sofie is vocal and her leadership from the back are qualities we will look for her to bring to our talented goalkeeping group…She will compete and challenge for playing time. Sofie Schunk on why she chose Marquette: "Marquette is the kind of school I can belong to. The Marquette Soccer team is my "dream" team- competitive, fun, family-oriented, outstanding players and coaches and the chance to play with the top players in the nation. Marquette also provides an incredible educational experience as one of the top schools in the nation in biology and medical sciences. I also get the chance to move away from home and experience a whole different world so that I can develop as a person and play to my potential."
