Marquette Opens Spring Season with Annual Tournament of Friends
Feb. 18, 2009
The Marquette women's soccer team will open the 2009 Spring Season with its sixth annual Tournament of Friends Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Marquette Gym. The Tournament of Friends will feature two Marquette teams of current players: a Marquette Blue Team and Marquette Gold Team, an alumni team, Wis.-Whitewater and two teams from Loyola (Ill.).
The tournament games will be small-sided; four field players and a goalkeeper, and played with a futsal ball. It will be a round-robin style tournament with 25-minute games. The two teams highest in the standings after round-robin play is complete will play in the 20-minute championship game at 5 p.m.
"Our team is excited to play some competitive games. The annual indoor tournament has been a lot of fun as we bridge the gap between our indoor and outdoor portion of the spring season," said head coach Markus Roeders. "Having the alumni in town is always special and I know they are eager to win the Cup this year. Our team has been working extremely hard thus far and we are reaping the benefits of individual training and conditioning."
Alumni that are expected to play include; Jaime Erickson, Kristie Matola, Katie Kelly, Britni Benage, Annie Dalecky, Heather Goranson, Kristen Jensen, Jess Taylor, Alison Mallams, Al Loughran, Lindsay Smale, Jenny Strachota, Jill Vendetti, Laura Culhane, Julia Egasti, Ashleigh Koenig, Erin Morgan and Shannon Cusick.
