Women’s soccer hosts Chicago Red Stars on Saturday

Feb. 23, 2018

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s soccer team begins its spring season with a 2:30 p.m. match against the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars at the Valley Fields seasonal dome on Saturday.

The Red Stars finished 2017 fourth in the NWSL standings and fell 1-0 to the North Carolina Courage in the league semifinals. Former Marquette standouts Morgan Proffitt and Mary Luba played for the Red Stars and head coach Rory Dames last season.

Saturday’s match will be the first for MU freshman Bonnie Lacey, who enrolled early for the spring semester. She joins a talented returning core that includes All-BIG EAST performers Carrie Madden and Kylie Sprecher, holding midfielder Ryley Bugay and goalkeeper Maddy Henry.

Bugay will depart immediately following Saturday’s contest to compete with the Philippines Women’s National Team as it tries to qualify for the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

After next weekend’s annual Tournament of Friends fustal tournament, the Golden Eagles have a few weeks off before a second home match against the University of Iowa scheduled for Sunday, March 25 at 11 a.m. Central time at the Valley dome. Marquette will close out its home spring slate against Northwestern on April 15 at 11:30 a.m. CT.

The Golden Eagles finished the 2017 campaign 13-7-1 overall and advanced to the BIG EAST tournament semifinals for the 10th time in their 13-year affiliation with the league.
