Marquette Women's Soccer Opens Spring Season
March 6, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team began its spring season by hosting its annual Tournament of Friends, round-robin indoor tournament on Sunday, March 3. Team Gold claimed the top spot, defeating Team Blue, 5-4, in the title match.
"It was another special day at the Marquette Gym," Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. "From a competitive standpoint, our goal was to see Team Blue and Team Gold advance to the final, which they did. Overall, we got better as a squad and it was a nice way to wrap up the indoor portion of our spring before heading outdoors this week."
Shalese Miller took home the Golden Boot award at the event, leading Team Gold and all scorers with 10 goals. Cara Jacobson, Mary Luba and Kate Reigle each tallied eight goals on the day for Team Blue.
Roeders was impressed and very appreciative of all the former Marquette players that returned to compete for Team Alumni in the tournament.
"Once again, we had a fantastic showing of our alumni group," Roeders said. "It brought back many special memories to see those ladies out there competing and having fun, it underscores how great of a Marquette family we have in place. They are the foundation of this program and we can't thank them enough."
Only four field players played at a time in the 25 minute games, and games were played using a futsal.
Squads from UW-Whitewater and Concordia (Wis.) also participated in the tournament.
