March 16, 2011
MILWAUKEE - Senior forward Ashley Bares of the Marquette University women's soccer team has signed a one-year contract to play professional soccer with UMF Stjarnan of the top-division Urvalsdedild located in Gardabaer, Iceland.
"Ashley has worked hard for this opportunity and will fully embrace it. Her goal has been to play at the next level and Marquette has prepared her well," said head coach Markus Roeders. "She finished with a strong senior year and definitely helped in our team's success. She is a goal scorer and those are hard to come by. Considering she has trained extremely hard over the past couple of months to get herself ready, once she gets to Iceland her focus can be adjusting to her new team and their style of soccer. We wish her much success and many goals."
Bares, an All-BIG EAST First Team selection, finished her senior season with 16 points on five goals and six assists. All five of her goals came in BIG EAST play, including the game-winner in a pivotal road victory at Connecticut. Bares concluded her career at Marquette playing in 86 games, and scoring 19 goals and adding 10 assists for 49 career points.
"Playing soccer in college and professionally were always things I dreamed about. Playing at MU was an amazing experience and exactly what I wanted for college ball, now being able to continue to live out my dreams and play professionally is truly amazing," said Bares.
Bares helped MU to 54 wins, two BIG EAST American Division titles and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2010. The Golden Eagles finished the 2010 season 16-5-3 overall, and ranked No. 12 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and No. 9 by Soccer America.
Gardabaer is located on the southwest coast of Iceland near the capital of Reykjavik. Last season, Stjarnan finished fourth in the league with a 9-4-5 record.
Bares will travel to Gardabaer in April for preseason training. The team will open its season on May 17.
