Women's Soccer Begins Spring Season
March 20, 2014
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's soccer team has released its 2014 spring schedule and will begin competition on Saturday, March 22 when the squad hosts former conference rival Notre Dame at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles have set a tough spring slate with four 2013 NCAA Tournament teams schedules. MU is back on the field after a 2013 season that had a regular season BIG EAST title and a conference tournament title; along with a sixth consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament.
MU is hosting the Irish at 3 p.m. Central time. The Golden Eagles and Notre Dame have a long standing history with each other as former BIG EAST rivals. When the squads last met, Marquette earned a 1-0 victory in the 2012 BIG EAST Championship semifinals. Notre Dame returns seven starters and 23 total from last season's team that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship.
Following a tilt with Notre Dame, the Golden Eagles will travel across town to play Iowa and crosstown foe, Milwaukee on March 30. MU defeated the Panthers 5-0 in a regular season game last year and has not faced the Hawkeyes since a 4-2 loss last spring in Iowa City. Iowa recorded its most successful season with a school-record 15 wins and first ever NCAA Tournament berth.
Marquette will then travel to Champaign, Ill. for three games on April 6 on the campus of Illinois. The Golden Eagles open against the Illini, who reached their fourth NCAA Sweet 16 in 2013. MU will face Northwestern following a short break. The Golden Eagles and Wildcats met in the 2012 regular season with MU taking home a 2-0 victory. Also in Champaign, Marquette will face Kentucky, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion, UCLA.
MU travels up to Madison to face Wisconsin on Wednesday, April 16 before finishing the 2014 spring schedule with a game against the Mexican National team in South Bend, Ind., a week later on Wednesday, April 23.
